Dutch Mussel Auction
Yerseke is home to the Dutch Mussel Auction, the only mussel auction in the world. The auction plays a prominent role in the Dutch mussel sector. All mussels grown in the Netherlands in the Wadden Sea and Eastern Scheldt find their way to markets in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and, to a slightly lesser extent, France through the auction.
Transactions are made at the auction and the quality in terms of size and meat weight is assessed here. In addition, the mussel auction provides information to growers, buyers and the government.
